Outlook’s Focused Inbox feature automatically sorts incoming emails into two tabs: “Focused” for messages deemed most important and “Other” for everything else. This helps prioritize key communications but can hide important university emails, like class updates or deadlines, in the “Other” tab.
Always check both tabs to ensure you don’t miss critical messages.
Why Check the “Other” Tab
The Focused tab displays emails from frequent contacts, or those that Outlook’s algorithms predict that you’ll want to see first based on your past interactions and reading habits. Emails from less frequent senders or bulk announcements often end up in the “Other” tab. Outlook uses machine learning to make these decisions, but it isn’t perfect and can misplace time-sensitive emails. Regularly switching to the “Other” tab ensures you catch everything promptly and avoid missing opportunities or requirements.
Turning Off Focused Inbox
If you prefer a single, unified inbox without the Focused/Other split, disable Focused Inbox in your account settings. This change applies account-wide and syncs across all your devices (web, desktop, and mobile) so you only need to do it once.
